Mark K. Stender

Mark Stender joined Higgs Fletcher & Mack in 1997. He graduated "with distinction" in 1972 from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was one of fourteen students in his class selected to participate in the Trident Scholar independent research program. After graduation and commissioning, Mr. Stender served as a naval officer for five years.

Since being admitted to the bar in 1982, Mr. Stender's law practice has largely emphasized real estate and business planning and litigation. In this regard, Mr. Stender has been involved in a variety of tax-exempt as well as taxable bond financing for multifamily and hotel developments, usually as developer's counsel, and has acted as a consultant to housing non-profits in structuring tax-credit financing for multifamily and single-family projects. Moreover, he has negotiated and documented a variety of mortgage transactions, sales and exchanges and leases, and he has represented lenders and borrowers in a number of loan workouts.

For approximately 13 years, Mr. Stender served as special real estate counsel to a large public agency, handling the various real estate matters outlined above, as well as negotiating and documenting the agency's multi-million dollar line-of-credit for public purpose real estate loans. As a litigator, Mr. Stender has prosecuted and defended judicial foreclosures, real estate and securities fraud cases, mechanics' lien and stop notice actions, trust contests and elder abuse cases, and probate matters. Mr. Stender also provides estate planning and probate services for his clients.
