MARTIN ELIOPULOS: PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY
Mission Hills, Hillcrest, Balboa Park ... this is the view from Martin Eliopulos' office. One could ask how it's possible to get any work done with such distractions, but after fourteen years with Higgs, Fletcher & Mack he's proven he can.
Originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming, Marty attended the University of Wyoming, where his physical strength earned him a football scholarship and his mental strength lead him to graduate with honors with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics. The inevitable course of action was to then go on to graduate school.
"I tried one semester of graduate school and did not like it. While I was very good with numbers, I found I liked interaction with people more," said Marty. "Law school was a natural choice, as my father was a lawyer for the Wyoming Public Service Commission for 30-plus years."
Marty's acceptance to the University of California, Davis School of Law brought him further west and, upon receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1990, converted him into the San Diegan he now is.
Marty immediately joined the team at Higgs, Fletcher & Mack and with his then mentor, now managing partner, John Morrell, found himself in the field of Bankruptcy Law. "In law school I had no idea I would end up in this specialty. But when I came to the Firm, San Diego was going through a mild recession, so the idea of bankruptcy/reorganization interested me." Now, as chair of the Bankruptcy & Reorganization practice group, he's become more than just interested in the field, he's become a leader for it.
Marty's continuing longevity with the Firm can be attributed to the atmosphere it provides. "It's enjoyable to come to work. A lot of people do it for the money and aren't real keen on the people they work with ... it's like a family here," said Marty.
And family means everything to him. While in his free time Marty may play a few rounds of golf, dabble in cooking, or brush up on the piano skills he's been fostering since age eight, his real hobby lies with his two children. When reflecting on his dedication to his kids Marty says, "I'm the coach for my son Alexander's baseball team, and for Sophia, my daughter, well, I'm equivalent to a soccer mom, only I'm a dance dad."
Lawyer, leader, father, mother, coach and chauffeur.whether at home or in the office, it's the concept of family that keeps him committed to his kids and to Higgs, Fletcher & Mack.
